What is a Nurse Practitioner?

Nurse Practitioners are primary health care providers who work side by side with physicians to provide medical services in a variety of healthcare settings. ARNPs (Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners) are Registered Nurses who have completed advanced study programs and passed the National Board exam. To maintain a license, state and national licensers require continuing education credits yearly, and ARNPs must undergo periodic peer review, go through clinical outcome evaluations and follow a code of ethical practice.

Like physicians, nurse practitioners are accountable for health care outcomes. To insure the highest quality of care, NPs work beside doctors and communicate readily on procedures, patient progress and follow-up. Nurse Practitioners are known for their caring bedside manner and are trained to be proactive in educating patients about their condition, treatment options and prevention.

Besides diagnosing and managing acute episodic and chronic illnesses, ARNPs emphasize health promotion and disease prevention. Most Nurse Practitioners, including Susan, are qualified to write prescriptions and must update credits to renew their license for this annually.
Nurse Practitioners practice full-scope family medicine, including:

  • Pediatrics
  • Ear, Nose, Throat Problems
  • Gynecology
  • Men’s Health Concerns
  • Somatic Pain (bone and joint pain)
  • Systemic Problems (organ and body system illness)
  • Geriatrics
  • Soft tissue injuries & sports medicine

About Me

A Registered Nurse since 1972, Susan Eastman is a pioneer in the Nurse Practitioner field. With a love of learning, Susan spent an extra four years of study to become an ARNP in 1979. During this time, she was instrumental in the development of Spokane Internal Medicine, a specialized group of doctors serving Spokane and the Inland Northwest.

While at SIM, she researched and implemented the Computerized Medical Records System, a subject she has lectured on as well. Susan practiced with this group for 25 years, often taking more classes, earning her prescriptive authority and teaching collegiate nursing courses. A long-time resident of Reardan, Susan was thrilled when Lincoln Hospital approached her about running its new outreach clinic there.

The Reardan Health Clinic opened Sept. 4 of 2000 with Susan at the helm. Today, Susan is joined at the Reardan Health Clinic by family practitioners Fred Reed, MD, and Donella Young, MD. Committed to the community, Susan and her colleagues work hard to bring top quality care, as well as special clinics and workshops to Reardan.

A proud supporter of Reardan High School, Susan saw her three children graduate from RHS and is busy watching three of her seven grandchildren in Reardan Indian activities. She participates in and supports community groups such as West Deep Creek Grange, the Mule Days Committee and Reardan Indian School Booster Club.
