The Activities Department incorporates the Eden Alternative to promote companionship, self-worth, variety and spontaneity. Each resident’s interests and abilities are assessed when they enter the long term care environment and a plan of how to fulfill the residents spiritual, intellectual, physical and social needs begins to develop. Residents are encouraged to participate in group activities that are in line with their interests, independent leisure pursuits or assisted leisure activity. Most residents have either compromised physical or cognitive ability. This may range from mild to severe. The Activities Department finds ways for all residents, regardless of their ability, to participate in leisure activities.
Recreational Therapy
The Recreation Therapist may work one-on-one with individuals to help them regain abilities in a variety of areas such as communication, cognition or fine motor control of their hands. Recreational Therapy can help individuals with pain, anxiety or coping problems. Some residents and patients have changes in their physical or mental ability that impacts their ability to participate in a favorite leisure activity. The Recreational Therapist can work with these individuals to adapt so they can continue to enjoy that interest or, if necessary, find a replacement leisure activity that can fulfill some of the same rewards as their favored activity.
