Activities and Recreational Therapy

Long Term Care Header

Each person is a tapestry of their personal history: their Long Term Care Activitiesloves and losses, friendships, work experiences, leisure pursuits, spiritual expression - a culmination of all of their life’s experiences. The need for meaningful experiences does not end upon admission to a nursing facility. In fact, older people have additional needs: to leave a legacy, to review their life and find it to have meaning; to make new friends and continue their previous life-style within the setting of the nursing facility. Our goal at Lincoln Long Term Care is for each person to feel welcome, well-known and find life worth living through daily interactions and activities.

Activities

The primary role of the Activities Department is to ensure that each resident has the opportunity to continue engaging in life-satisfying experiences.

The Activities Department has a full slate of recreation and leisure groups and operates seven days a week. They offer opportunities for physical activity, social involvement, creative expression, spiritual connection and self-fulfillment. Some activities include…

  • Visiting Beautician
  • Gardening in raised ergonomic garden spots
  • Pet grooming and bird feeding
  • Crafts
  • Bingo & board games
  • Exercise groups
  • Outdoor recreation and parties
  • Visits from area children’s groups
  • Gospel Sing-a-long, Bible study and weekly church service
  • Baking in the 29er Diner kitchen
  • Shopping in and outside of the facility
  • Local theater and community events with our handy LTC Shuttle

The Activities Department incorporates the Eden Alternative to promote companionship, self-worth, variety and spontaneity. Each resident’s interests and abilities are assessed when they enter the long term care environment and a plan of how to fulfill the residents spiritual, intellectual, physical and social needs begins to develop.

Residents are encouraged to participate in group activities that are in line with their interests, independent leisure pursuits or assisted leisure activity. Most residents have either compromised physical or cognitive ability. This may range from mild to severe. The Activities Department finds ways for all residents, regardless of their ability, to participate in leisure activities.

Recreational Therapy

The Recreation Therapist may work one-on-one with individuals to help them regain abilities in a variety of areas such as communication, cognition or fine motor control of their hands. Recreational Therapy can help individuals with pain, anxiety or coping problems.

Some residents and patients have changes in their physical or mental ability that impacts their ability to participate in a favorite leisure activity. The Recreational Therapist can work with these individuals to adapt so they can continue to enjoy that interest or, if necessary, find a replacement leisure activity that can fulfill some of the same rewards as their favored activity.
