Your management team

Diabetes doesn’t have to be complicated. Our new CDEMS (Chronic Disease Electronic Management System) program will help you understand your diabetes by tracking your blood sugar levels, blood pressure, cholesterol and weight at every doctor’s appointment. Each diabetes patient receives a readout of their latest numbers, and, along with their physician, can track health areas which need more detailed management. CDEMS takes the guesswork out of diabetes — you and your provider will know where you stand and can use this knowledge to help you live free of complications. You, as the patient, are no longer a passive recipient of instruction, but an active member of the team!

Comprehensive testing

Not only do we have a full-service lab facility on campus for all your testing needs, but North Basin Medical Clinics provides on-site A1-C testing — the gold standard for diabetes management. The American Diabetes Association recommends that all patients with diabetes be routinely tested for A1-C, as often as every 3 months. The A1-C can predict the risk for development of chronic complications, and is used as a compliment to daily glucose testing.

TeleHealth Connections

Knowledge is the first step to controlling diabetes. Educational seminars with top physicians and diabetes educators are available right here in Davenport thanks to our  TeleHealth satellite service. Not only can our patients take part in interactive televised classes on diabetes, but they can schedule personalized consultations with experts on a variety of topics. The educational opportunities are endless and convenient. For information on upcoming classes, talk to your provider or call (509) 725-7101 ext. 145.

Nutrition Counseling

Battling with diabetes? The key to controlling your blood sugars is personalized nutrition  therapy. Learn to modify your eating habits to successfully avoid complications of this debilitating disease.

Dietitian Irene Rapp focuses on managing carbohydrate intake, portion  control and incorporating nutrient rich and high fiber foods in your diet. Meal and menu planning  is a major focus of diabetic counseling.

For those needing more comprehensive understanding of insulin as it  relates to diet, Irene discusses dosing, type and timing of insulin.

If being overweight is a factor, Irene says the solution is habits, not diets. Her confidential services include calorie intake, behavior modification, dining out, cooking tips and shopping strategies. Ask about her “Successfully Slim” weight loss program offered locally. Call (509) 725-7101 ext. 139.

Are you at risk for diabetes?

Each year, 1.3 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Today, roughly 18 million Americans live with this disorder — about double the number of people diagnosed in 1980. You don’t have to be one of them.

Risk factors you can’t control

Some things you can’t change, including your genes. If you can say “yes” to any of these risk factors, you may want to consult your doctor...

  • Family History

  • Advancing Age

  • Race

Risk factors you can control

In many cases, it’s up to you whether you suffer from diabetes. There are many lifestyle choices we make which are known to lead to diabetes including…

  • Excess weight or obesity

  • Poor diet

  • Lack of exercise

  • Smoking

  • Excessive alcohol use

  • High cholesterol & LDL numbers

  • Other cardiovascular disease including high blood pressure

While there is no guarantee that modifying a lifestyle will prevent diabetes, the change may delay development of the condition. A person at higher risk should take preventive measures as recommended by a physician. If you feel you’re at high risk for developing diabetes, don’t wait for symptoms to begin. See your healthcare provider today to make a management plan that will prevent the onset of diabetes.
